JFSLA FOUNDERS
The JFSLA is a five-night, six-day residential Academy for girls ages 12-18. The Academy focuses on two overlapping components-- sports and leadership. The aim of the JFSLA is to expose students to Julie’s great passion: the concept of not just being a leader on the field but a LEADER IN LIFE. Students will be immersed in a richly enjoyable curriculum that weaves these two themes together.
The JFSLA's sports component is soccer, and Julie and her staff deliver this element of the Academy with the same energy that has made her existing girls soccer day camps so wonderfully successful. The JFSLA's sister camp, the Julie Foudy Soccer Camps, has been instructing kids for over 15 years. Julie brings the technical and tactical training of her day camps to the JFSLA, infusing the soccer training with leadership principles and team-building skills. As with Julie's day camps, the soccer staff of the JFSLA consists of some of the biggest names in women's soccer, including other Olympic Gold Medalists from the US Women's National Team, international stars, professional players, and top collegiate coaches and players.
The second component of the Academy is leadership. Our leadership curriculum is geared toward developing and expanding leadership skills in our students. Students will participate in hands-on activities and do team-building exercises that focus on the following themes: how to develop the confidence to lead, the different roles and styles of leaders, how to be a positive leader on your team, and how to be a leader in your community -- which includes a service learning component that each student can take to her own community. Students will also hear from guest speakers, including well-known politicians, business leaders, and educators.
Although each day is divided into roughly half-soccer and half- leadership curriculum, the JFSLA is designed so that the sports and leadership components tie together. As Julie knows, and as many agree, sports and leadership go hand-in-hand. The lessons an athlete learns on the field of striving for goals, motivating others, and problem solving translate into leadership skills the athlete can apply off the field. By the same token, individuals who develop leadership skills off the field are often able to bring those skills to the field to draw out the best in themselves and their teammates.
Our Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy philosophy is to bring out not only the best soccer player, but also the best leader in each student. Julie often says, "Sports gave me my voice." We want our students to experience the confidence sports can offer. And as Julie learned with the National Team, LOVE what you do! Laughter permitted.

Leadership Areas of emphasis:
Theme: SELF…Being a leader that others will want to follow.
- Recognizing all the different types of leaders.
- Discovering confidence to bring out the leader in you.
- Developing self-discipline, self-respect and respect for others.
- Being a good listener, communicator.
- Finding your voice.
- Making decisions that enhance team chemistry.
- Overcoming obstacles that may impede good leadership.
- Conflict resolution skills: helping others deal with difficult situations.
- Verbal leadership: the right words, right time, right tone.
- Creating leaders around you = good leadership.
- Learning the value of giving back in life
- The "Pay it forward" approach
Theme: LIFE…The emphasis behind our entire leadership curriculum will be: CHOOSE TO MATTER!
- I hear, I forget.
- I see, I remember.
- I DO, I UNDERSTAND.
For returning students: Returning students will have a curriculum that builds on the themes introduced in their first year at the Academy.
The students will work on measuring how effective their leadership skills have been applied during the last year and areas upon which they can improve. We will also integrate a mentoring program into the curriculum for these returning students. The mentoring program will put practical leadership skills to use and, at the same time, provide younger students with role models from whom they can follow and learn.
Please visit our Alumni in Action! page to see what our current alumni are doing in their communities.
Guest Speakers/Panel Discussions - Guest speakers will address the following:
What role has athletics played in their lives?
How did it help shape their careers?
How do I best get noticed by college coaches? How does the recruiting process work and how can I simplify it?
How can sports provide a personal foundation, which a person can then build upon for the rest of her life?
Small group discussions - Breakout session will allow athletes to talk to each other about their own experiences and about concepts introduced to them during the day in leadership class.
Our curriculum during the small group discussions will be very interactive – lots of discussion and small group activities.
Our College Dinner Chat curriculum includes: developing self esteem, choosing to play in college, getting recruited, understanding sports nutrition, and addressing difficult teammates and coaches effectively.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Choosing to Matter in your own community is a foundation upon which our curriculum is built. Learning the value of giving back in life is so important. The "Pay it forward" approach embodied by the JFSLA allows our students to see FIRST HAND, that spending a couple of hours as a servant leader can change someone's life. I hear, I forget - I see, I remember - I DO, I UNDERSTAND.
We want this to be interactive leadership learning! Live. Lead. Pass it on!
We encourage the students to take all these leadership concepts learned during the week and apply them to LIFE.

From Left to right: Todd Smith, Edson McClellan, Kerri McClellan, Julie Foudy and Ian Sawyers
The concept behind the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy all started with this group of five. The “fab five”, “the fearless five”, “the founding five”..…all are names that we have tossed around, only to end in laughter. Call us what you want, here is the cast of characters (and characters is the right word!):
Julie Foudy (Stanford University, B.S.): You already have my bio. What it doesn’t say is how the JFSLA would have never been a reality without the incredible passion and work of the other four. So, enough about me, on to the others…..
Ian Sawyers (Carnegie College, England): Former professional and collegiate soccer coach…and also my hubby and great father of Izzy and Declan. Ian was the head coach of the WUSA’s San Jose Cyberrays for all three years of the league’s existence. As much as it pains me to say, they won the League Championship the first year, which was 2001. Regretfully, the San Diego Spirit, my team, never won. Recently Ian was a Head Coach and General Manager in the new WPS league. Ian and I have been offering girls’ soccer camps for 14years before launching the Sports Leadership Academy concept.
Todd Smith (Lafayette College, B.A.; Lehigh University, M.Ed.): The current Athletic Director and Head Women's Soccer Coach at The Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) in Montclair, New Jersey. The former soccer player/DJ extraordinaire is known to throw out a rap and beatbox or two (students at past JFSLA’s can vouch for this one). Although he can compete with Eminem, his creative ideas and passion for the JFSLA are what impress us most. When he's not working at MKA or with us at JFSLA he's usually busy losing to Ian on the golf course.
Kerri McClellan (University of California Berkeley, B.A.): Kerri, one of my best friends, and I grew up playing soccer together (from the age of 7) for the Mission Viejo Soccerettes (Go Green Machine!). Kerri never ceases to amaze us with the number of different hats she can wear, and mind you, not just wear, but wear flawlessly. First and foremost, she wears the hat of MOTHER to three adorable girls, Megan and Madison (age 11… Megan is all of 1 minute older than Madison) as well as Macy, now almost 4 years old! Kerri then runs the Julie Foudy Leadership Foundation and also helps the JFSLA behind the scenes on a daily basis. Oh, and by the way, on the side she runs triathlons in record times.
Edson McClellan (University of Pennsylvania, B.A.; University of San Diego, JD): Edson is Kerri’s husband and grew up on the East Coast in New Jersey. In fact, he grew up on the campus of one of our JFSLA locations, the Peddie School. Edson, a lawyer in Southern California, and Kerri are the link that brought us all together. Todd and Edson have known each other for years. Edson and Kerri introduced us to Todd in 2004…..and on that day the idea behind the JFSLA became a REALITY!
The history behind the JFSLA (the very short version):
So, rewind to 2004… Edson and Kerri have just introduced us to Todd. Ian and I had always wanted to do “more” with our soccer camps in regards to teaching young girls about leadership lessons on the field and in life. Todd had the same idea in mind. We all quickly discovered that we had the same vision: we wanted it to be hands-on, self-affirming, and life-altering. We decided that we should form an Academy that would combine soccer and leadership. We wanted these young girls to come back to us in 10-15 years and tell us how the Academy changed their lives. Two years later, we successfully launched the first ever Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy in the summer of 2006. We have not stopped smiling since. Going forward, we will continue to live by our motto: LIVE. LEAD. PASS IT ON!
